A study on the Critical Thinking Disposition, Problem-Solving Ability and Self-Directed Learning Ability of Freshmen Nursing Students
Chung Bok-Yae

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability and self-directed learning ability of freshman nursing students.

Methods : The data were collected from 74 students by self-administered questionnaires on Feb, 2010. Critical thinking, problem-solving ability and self-directed learning ability were measured using the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale for Nursing Students by Kwon et al. (2006) and the Core Competency by Lee et al. (2003). Descriptive statistics
and correlation coefficients with the SPSS version 12.0 program were used to analyze the data. Also, data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA and Sheffe test.

Results : The mean score for problem-solving ability, critical thinking disposition and self-directed learning ability was 3.40, 3.33, and 3.19 respectively on a 5 point scale. The critical thinking disposition and self-directed learning ability have a significant positive correlation with problem-solving ability. Self-directed learning ability was a statistically significant difference according to age (t=-2.131, p<.05). There were significant differences ¡®motivation for nursing school admission¡¯ in problem solving ability (F=2.411, p<.05), and ¡®age¡¯ in self-directed learning ability (t=-2.131, p<.05).

Conclusions : The findings indicate that there is needed the nursing education program to develop and increase the self-directed learning ability, and the longitudinal study to detect the influencing factors in critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability and self-directed learning ability of nursing students.
